Datalogic Gryphon GD4200 / GBT4200 troubleshooting
Find your symptom and fix it: no power, base link, no output, wrong characters, unread barcodes, range, Bluetooth pairing, charging and factory reset.
In this guide
Most Gryphon GD4200 and GBT4200 problems come down to the connection, the interface, the keyboard layout or the GBT4200's battery. The barcodes named below are in the Gryphon I GD/GBT/GM4200 Product Reference Guide (PRG).

Fixes
1. Nothing happens when you pull the triggerNo light, no beep, no aiming line
CauseGD4200: loose cable or a USB port without power. GBT4200: empty battery, or the scanner switched itself off after the Power Off barcode or an idle time (Powerdown Timeout).
Fix
- GD4200: push the cable into the handle until it clicks and try another USB port on the PC itself, not on a hub.
- GBT4200: pull the trigger again. After Power Off or Powerdown Timeout, the next trigger pull switches it on.
- Still dead? Out of the base, double-tap the top of the scanner head. A red blinking battery light means below 2 %. Put the scanner in the base and let it charge.
2. GBT4200 doesn't work with this baseCharges in the base, but no data arrives
CauseThe scanner is still linked to another base or a Bluetooth host.
Fix
- Scan the Unlink barcode (PRG section "Linking the Reader").
- Put the scanner in the base you want to use. That links the two.
- Several scanners around? A short press (1–5 seconds) on the base's button pages the scanner that belongs to it.
3. Scanner reads, but no text appearsBeep and green light, empty field
CauseThe interface does not match your software, or no input field is active.
Fix
- Click into a field or open Notepad, so the text has somewhere to go.
- For typing into any program, scan Select USB Standard Keyboard (in the Quick Reference Guides: Select USB Keyboard). Interface barcodes need one scan and no ENTER/EXIT.
- Software that reads a COM port needs Select USB-COM-STD instead.
- Light blinking slowly with no beep? The scanner is disabled; hold the trigger for 5 seconds to program it.
4. Wrong charactersLetters swapped, symbols or accents instead of digits
CauseThe scanner sends key positions for a US keyboard by default, while Windows uses your local layout.
Fix
Set the scanner's Country Mode to your Windows layout, or use ALT mode. The exact names for Baltic, Finnish, Polish and Czech layouts are in Gryphon 4200 programming.
5. Some barcodes are not readAiming line on, but no beep
CauseBoth models are linear imagers that read 1D barcodes only, so QR and other 2D codes never read. Otherwise the barcode type is switched off, the label is damaged or the distance is wrong.
Fix
- Square codes made of dots or blocks are 2D and need a 2D scanner.
- Place the aiming line across the whole barcode, including the blank margins. Move closer or further away, and clean the scan window.
- If no barcode of one type reads, enable that type in the PRG's Symbologies section, between two ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE scans, or in Datalogic Aladdin.
6. GBT4200 stops sending away from the baseScans lost, link to the base dropped
CauseThe scanner is out of range: up to 100 m in open air, much less through walls, racks and metal. If the Disconnect Beep is enabled (PRG section Wireless Beeper Features), a beep signals the lost link.
Fix
- Walk back towards the base, or put the scanner in it.
- Often out of range? With Batch Mode set to Automatic (PRG section Batch Features) the scanner stores barcodes in memory while it is out of range and disconnected.
7. Direct Bluetooth pairing failsScanner not found, or pairing error
CauseThe scanner is not in pairing mode, the host still holds an old pairing, or the security settings don't match.
Fix
- Remove any old GBT4200 entry from the host's Bluetooth device list.
- Scan Link to Host in HID mode and search for new devices on the host straight away.
- If the host shows a passkey or PIN, scan it with the barcodes in the PRG's Keypad appendix and finish with Passkey END.
- Still an error? Check the Bluetooth Security Level (PRG, Bluetooth-Only Features). If Level 3 is set and the host cannot handle passkeys, Datalogic suggests Level 2.
8. Battery and charging problemsNo charging light, slow charging, short runtime
CauseA very flat battery first pre-charges (charging light fading red). No reaction in the base points to a badly seated battery or objects on the base. A base on the PC's USB port charges slowly, and old batteries hold less.
Fix
- Push the scanner fully into the base and listen for the chirp. Remove anything lying in the base.
- Recently changed the battery? Check under the screwed battery cover in the handle that the battery cable is plugged in.
- Charge at 0–40 °C. From empty, a base on a PC USB port needs about 10 hours, with external power about 4 hours.
- Runtime keeps getting shorter? Replace the battery pack (RBP-GM4200); Datalogic recommends a new one every year.
9. Reset to defaultsStart again from a known configuration
CauseSettings were changed by mistake or are unknown.
Fix
Scan Restore EU Factory Configuration or Restore USA Factory Configuration from the PRG section "Resetting the Product Configuration to Defaults". One scan returns all settings, including the interface, to factory values. Then set the Country Mode and suffix again, see Gryphon 4200 programming.
Lights and beeps at a glance
| Signal | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Four high beeps at switch-on | Normal power-up |
| One beep and green light after a scan | Good read |
| Light blinking slowly (100 ms on, 900 ms off), no beep | Scanner disabled. Some interfaces start it this way; hold the trigger for 5 seconds to program it. |
| Four low beeps | Programming mode started. Scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE to save and leave it. |
| Light blinking fast (200 ms on, 200 ms off) with one error beep | ROM failure. Contact us for service. |
| Base: Power/Data steady | Base has power |
| Base: Power/Data blinking | Data passing through the base |

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my Gryphon scan QR codes?
The GD4200 and GBT4200 are linear imagers and read 1D barcodes only. QR codes need a 2D scanner.
Why won't my GBT4200 connect to a new base?
It is still linked to its old base. Scan Unlink, then place it in the new base.
How do I reset a Gryphon GD4200 or GBT4200?
Scan Restore EU Factory Configuration or Restore USA Factory Configuration from the PRG. It resets all settings, including the interface, with one scan.
