Zebra ZD220 vs ZD230: which entry-level label printer to buy

The ZD220 and ZD230 look the same and share the same user guides, the same controls and the same 104 mm print width at 203 dpi. The ZD230 adds what the ZD220 leaves out: a higher top speed (152 instead of 102 mm/s), network options, 300 m ribbon on thermal transfer models and a cutter option. Choose the ZD220 for a single PC over USB. Choose the ZD230 (ZD230t or ZD230d) for shared, networked or busier printing.

Choose the ZD220 if
  • The printer connects to one computer by USB
  • You print moderate volumes, where 102 mm/s is enough
  • 74 m ribbons suit your volume, or you print direct thermal without ribbon
  • You want an affordable 4-inch desktop printer with ZPL and EPL
Choose the ZD230 if
  • Several computers share the printer over Ethernet or Wi-Fi, or phones and tablets print over Bluetooth
  • You print in batches and want 152 mm/s
  • You print with ribbon and want fewer changes with 300 m rolls
  • You need labels cut automatically

What both printers share

Zebra covers both models in one user guide per print method, so loading, calibration and troubleshooting work the same way. Both have a single FEED button and one STATUS light; you calibrate by holding FEED and releasing it straight after the double flash. Labels, 74 m ribbons and media roll adapters fit both. Zebra's Windows Printer Driver v10 supports both, and Zebra Setup Utilities and ZebraDesigner Essentials are free for both. Our ZD220/ZD230 setup guide and other ZD230 guides apply to both models.

Where they really differ

Connectivity

The ZD220 has USB only. Each ZD230 is built with one connectivity option: USB only, USB with Ethernet, USB with Bluetooth, or USB with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Options are fitted in the factory and cannot be added later, so pick the right part number at purchase. On our product pages the part number shows which interfaces each version has.

Note

A ZD230 with Wi-Fi sold in Europe, the Middle East or Africa from 1 August 2025 meets the EU radio equipment security rules: during setup you set a Protected Mode password, which you need later to change certain settings. Zebra's EU RED FAQ lists the ZD220 (USB only) and ZD230 versions without Wi-Fi (USB only, USB plus Ethernet, USB plus Bluetooth) as not affected.

Ribbon capacity

On thermal transfer models, Zebra gives a media-to-ribbon ratio of 1:1 for 74 m ribbon and 1:4 for 300 m ribbon. A 300 m roll on a ZD230t therefore lasts through several label rolls. The ZD230t box includes an empty 300 m core and adapters for non-Zebra 300 m ribbon.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ZD230 faster than the ZD220?

Yes. The ZD230 prints up to 152 mm/s (6 ips), the ZD220 up to 102 mm/s (4 ips). Both print at 203 dpi.

Can I add Wi-Fi or Ethernet to a ZD220 later?

No. The ZD220 is USB only. On the ZD230, Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are factory-installed options, so choose the right version when you buy.

Do the ZD220 and ZD230 use the same labels and ribbon?

Yes, both take the same labels and 74 m ribbons. Only the ZD230t also takes 300 m ribbon.

Do the ZD220 and ZD230 support ZPL and EPL?

Yes. Both understand ZPL II and EPL2, so they can replace older Zebra desktop printers.
